One of our most important goals this year is to prepare students for the FCAT Reading and Writing Test. Here are some tips to help you get started.

FCAT WRITING:

EXPOSITORY
ESSAY:
To Explain  (5 paragraphs)
Introduction Lead-In (get their attention!!!), Topic Sentence (steal this from the prompt), 3 Reasons
2nd Strongest Reason: Topic Sentence, Keywords, Transitions, Details, FIRES
3rd
Strongest Reason:
Topic Sentence, Keywords, Transitions, Details, FIRES
1st
Strongest Reason:
Topic Sentence, Keywords,  Transitions, Details, FIRES
Conclusion: Re-State Topic Sentence, 3 Reasons,
Clincher (a final thought!!!)

 

PERSUASIVE
ESSAY:
To Convince  (6 paragraphs)
Introduction Lead-In (get their attention!!!), Topic Sentence (steal this from the prompt), 3 Reasons (PROs)
Refute: Attack the opposite point of view (CONs)
State why they are wrong or bad
2nd Strongest Reason: Topic Sentence, Keywords, Transitions, Details, FIRES
3rd
Strongest Reason:
Topic Sentence, Keywords, Transitions, Details, FIRES
1st
Strongest Reason:
Topic Sentence, Keywords, Transitions, Details, FIRES
Conclusion: Re-State Topic Sentence, 3 Reasons,
Clincher (a final thought!!!)

FCAT READING: 

1. Read the Questions First!!!
2. Label your paragraphs
3. Use the process of elimination in answering questions
4. Remember to use Details and Examples from the story to answer the extended
    response questions (2-3 sentences for the short response and 4-6 sentences
    for the longer response)
5. Always go back and check your answers.  Don't Rush!!!

What is FCAT?

FLORIDA COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT TEST

This test targets a student's ability to think.  Students must answer questions regarding an author's point of view, the main idea of a story, interpret meanings and vocabulary words, and other critical thinking skills.

What is a TOPIC SENTENCE?

A topic sentence explains to the reader what your whole essay is about.  It the the subject or thesis of your essay.

What is a PROMPT?

A prompt tells you what you should be writing about.  It gives you your direction in writing your essay.  Your prompt reveals whether your essay is  Expository or Persuasive.

What are FIRES?

Facts Incidents Reasons Examples Statistics

What is a LEAD-IN?

A lead-in is a sentence or two that grabs the reader's attention.  It gets the reader to start thinking about your essay before you present the facts.

What is a CLINCHER?

A clincher is a sentence or two that leaves the reader with a final thought.  It's your last chance to get the reader's attention or convince them to see your point-of-view.

 What is a KEYWORD?

Keywords are words that can be found in the prompt.  They are the main words which should be repeated all throughout your essay.  Keywords keep your essay focused and organized.

What is a TRANSITION?

A transition is a word that leads you from one idea to the next.  Examples:  To begin with, In conclusion, However, On the other hand, Next, Finally, Also, and many, many more. (see me for a copy of all these words)
