Did you know that this is actually the third physical location for MHS?
Here's a brief timeline...
1902: Established as a two-story wooden structure, for 15 students, on NE First Avenue.
1903: MHS opens with an enrollment of 264 (the pattern for overcrowding was set early!)
1911: A three-story masonry structure replaces the wood building.
1915: The high school moves to 275 NW Second Avenue.
1927: Groundbreaking for the current location takes place on March 18, 1927.
1928: Students enter the new building on Valentines Day, February 14th.
1990: MHS is added to the National Register of Historic Sites.
And some staggering facts about the construction...
- Cost: $1,288,095.62
- Materials: 2,000,000 feet of rough lumber, 642 tons of steel, 12 carloads of interior tile, 20,000 barrels of cement, sand and rock, and 79 marble and slate blackboards.
