Mrs. Wilder will distribute a weekly homework packet. This packet will contain targeted language/speech homework. Please complete assigned daily homework and return the packet every day. A signature is required by the homework helper daily.
Concepts Program: This is a language program used to improve your child's understanding of the basic concepts. Homework for this program will be included in the weekly homework packet and should be completed on four days. The parent/helper should complete this particular homework by recording the responses of the student. The first three practices include writing a plus if your child responds correctly to the picture or minus if your child responds incorrectly to the picture. The fourth practice requires the parent/helper to point to the picture then write the responses (verbatim) of the child on the line. Feel free to write a note in the comment section about your child's progress. A sample of the paper is below.
This program is designed for kindergarten through second grade children with severe speech and/or language problems, and/or specific learning disabilities. The program personnel consists of a full-time ESE teacher, full-time speech language pathologist, and a paraprofessional.
Because this is an intensive program, attendance is very important. As we are always learning, your child's attendance is essential. Whenever your child is absent from school, please send a note explaining why he/she was absent when he/she returns to school. If a note is not received the absence will automatically be considered unexcused.
Please make sure your child has the following each and every day:
Pencil with eraser
Glue stick
Scissors
Crayons
Homework folder
Jacket/sweater
1) Keep hands, feet, and objects to self - no hitting, fighting, etc.
2) Respect all adults.
3) No eating during class time.
4) Do not take anything belonging to school (or anyone else) home unless you have permission.
5) Must eat breakfast and lunch daily.
Little books: Frequently little books will be sent home for you to practice with your child. These little books will target whatever category or concepts we're addressing at the time. Receptive practice: spread the pictures out and ask your child to point to target pictures. Expressive practice: spread the pictures out, point to a picture, then ask your child to name the picture/concept. After practice labeling and identifying the pictures, please initial and date the attached grid. Failure to sign and date the grid implies your child did not practice and he/she will receive an "x" on his/her checksheet.
Journal: The journal, a booklet of language activities, will be sent home monthly to be completed. These activities SHOULD NOT be done by the child alone. The purpose of the activities is to promote language between the child and helper. If one activity is done per night or several over each weekend, then the journal will be completed by the end of the month. Your child will receive two grades for this journal.
Booklist: Your child will be required to read seven books per month. The booklist requirements:
Kindergartners: A parent, older sibling, family member, friend, etc. should read an age appropriate book to the child. The kindergartner is then required to write the name of the book and draw a picture of what happened in the story. This is a perfect opportunity to promote language and the reader should ask the kindergartner questions about the story.
First and second graders: A parent, older sibling, family member, friend, etc. should listen to an appropriate reading level book read by the child. The first or second grader should then complete the form provided. He/she should write the name of the book, author, and write a few sentences telling what the story was about. Your child should write in complete sentences.
