Bob Dylan's song "Hurricane" is an excellent example of how song could be a powerful vehicle of social protest.  In 1975, Dylan made the plight of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter famous through the publicity from his rockin' protest song.  Although it took many years until Rubin Carter was freed from jail for a crime he never committed, Dylan's lyrics helped his cause along the road to freedom.  That's the power of a protest song.
