Course Description

The seventh grade social studies curriculum consists of the following content area strands: Civics, Geography, and Economics. The primary content for the course pertains to the principles, functions, and organization of government; the origins of the American political system; the roles, rights, responsibilities of United States citizens; and methods of active participation in our political system. The course is embedded with strong geographic and economic components to support civic education instruction.

Current Events - Weekly Assignment
Find a news article about something presently going on in the world. Write a brief summary of the article in the Current Events tab of your Civics OneNote Notebook. No sports or entertainment news.

Expository Writing - The President Assigned Mar. 6
Which characteristic do you think is most important in a president? Is it the president's profession, education, religion, or some other characteristic? Explain your reasoning in a paragraph.

Supreme Court Case Poster - Due Nov. 16
Create a posterboard with a description of a landmark Supreme Court case.

The posterboard should include a description of the legal controversy, descriptions of the arguments of the two parties in the case, and the holding of the Court.

Primary Sources: The Duties of American Citizenship Assigned 9/14
Re-read Theodore Roosevelt's speech The Duties of American Citizenship that we started reading and discussing in class. Use the text of the speech to answer the questions on the page titled "Primary Source Understandings and Reflections Activity" that was handed out in class.

Find examples of each of the categories of citizenship listed on the page and quote from the speech to support your answer.

What is a Citizen? WS
Use the 14th amendment to describe the requirements for citizenship. Select whether the "Law of Soil" or the "Law of Blood" applies to each scenario.

Match the causes and effects listed for each of the skits we performed in class.

What is a Primary Source?
Search "What is a Primary Source?" on Google or your favorite search engine and switch to image view. Select one image and write one paragraph on Microsoft Word.

Describe in your own words which image you selected. Why do you think it represents what is a primary source and how the study of primary sources will help understand social science concepts/content?

Digital Device Initiative

Tablet computers have been deployed to seventh grade classrooms. Digital content, including content from course textbooks, has been loaded on the tablets, allowing students to access the curriculum offline. Tablets will be used by students in class daily. More information about the M-DCPS digital initiative is available on their website.

The seventh grade civics class will make extensive use of the tablet computers provided by the school district. Some class work will be assigned and reviewed electronically.
