Design
Process:
Understand
the Problem:
Create a CO2 dragster following strict
specifications to compete for design and speed.
Follow the Dade County Fair and Exposition Rules
Research:
Science of Speed movie and
website
Dr. Zoom dragster design movie
and handout
Measure example cars to learn
requirements (graded handout)
Whitebox Learning
digital car design and tests.
Brainstorm/Thumbnails:
Start a list of ideas.
Sketch as you brainstorm.
Create at least 3 sketches. These
will be graded.
Rough
Sketch:
Full size working drawing. USE PENCIL
Measure it against the requirements and change as
needed.
Make a copy using the light table:
-
turn in one copy and the measuring handout for 2
grades.
-
cut the other copy and tape to the wood blank. This
working drawing will be used to cut your car.
Prototype:
Weight your car, decide if more wood should be
removed to get near the minimum weight.
Put the test wheels on and test it. Complete the
handout.
Sand, seal and paint your car following procedures.
Install your permanent wheels, etc. Your finished car
is your prototype.
Test
and Improve if necessary:
We did this with the prototype before we painted it
so you could change it easily without having to repaint. Most necessary
changes should be done already but test your car again, see if it rolls
properly and make any necessary adjustments.
Final
Presentation:
Take a picture of your car and save it to the class project folder with
your name and keyword.
