21 Ways to be Happy!

LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT YEAR!

Dear Parents,

My name is Marlene F. Marcus, and I will be your child’s first grade teacher this year. Because of this I’d like to take the opportunity to tell you a few things about myself - both personally and professionally.

I was raised in Chicago, Illinois, the Windy City. I still love Autumn in the Mid-West with the falling leaves, the warmth of the people and the cool of the air. I received my BA degree in Elementary Education from the University of Miami. My Master’s  degree and Specialist Degree were completed at Nova South Eastern University. I did my Internship at West Laboratory School with an optional internship elected at Leewood in their Gifted Program. This will be my twenty-seventh year of full-time teaching at West Laboratory School. I have two children, Andrea and Phillip who live outside of Florida.

This school year will be an exciting year. We will continue our successful school wide reading and math programs. You will notice much growth at the end of this important year, not only physically but emotionally.

**HOMEWORK** The home learning packet will be given on Mondays and returned on
Thursday when the class will go over the assignments.

The spelling test will be on Thursdays unless there is no school on that day
and an alternate day is assigned.

Please check the Internet at my website for additional projects, class news and educational support.  We all want homework to be a positive experience

                                    EMAIL: mfmarcus@westlab.dadeschools.net

We will go over the homework objectives everyday so your child is clear on what is expected. This should reinforce and help your child succeed in all academic areas. Please sign your initials that you have seen and checked each daily assignment, so your child knows we are working together for their best efforts. As each new lesson objective is based on previous ones, please do not allow your child to fall behind in these important areas. Even if not assigned, daily reading (20 minutes) enhances vocabulary, word meaning, inference and comprehension.  A  reading log
will be given out.  Please make additional copies so you have plenty for weekly
reading by your child.  Each weekly reading should be turned in on Thursdays with the weekly Homework Packet.

FOLDERS:

The new plastic folder is to be used for home learning and any important assignments or papers from me to you and vice versa.

**The Red folder is for Language Arts/Social Studies packets I will give to the student
and is to be kept in school.

**The Blue folder is for Math/Science materials I will give to the student
and is to be kept in school.

Parents are the most important people in a child’s life, and we need to work together for the benefit of your child. I need you to support my academic, homework and discipline efforts here at school. In return, I will keep you informed about all aspects of your child’s experiences at school. With school and home working together, I know that each and every student will have his or her most successful school year ever.

Sincerely,

Marlene F. Marcus,  Teacher
