Dear Parents,
One necessary first grade skill is to develop a comfort level with basic
math facts
(addition and subtraction). We will be learning a variety of strategies
to accomplish this skill (counting on… doubles… doubles plus 1, 2… using
a number line… turn around facts).
Throughout the school year, your child will be encouraged to use one or
more of these strategies along with simple memorization of facts. First
graders will try to master a set of facts every week. Timed tests will
be given every Friday and the children who pass the criteria for a set
of facts will be allowed to move on to the next facts set.
To make the most of this, children will need to practice at home. Please
include daily
practice of these facts. You may help your child practice by using the
paper flashcards your child made, selecting the Math Fact your child is
working on. Remember that you can check the List your child is working
on by checking his or her agenda.
As your child passes a set of facts, by successfully completing the test
in a given period of time, a note will go into your child’s agenda with
a new set of facts. Otherwise he or she will need to continue practicing
the same set, and be retested.
Each child will keep track of his or her results. The purpose is not to
encourage
competition but to praise hard work and effort. I appreciate your help

Strategies
Counting on: 9+2= Start on 9 and count on 2 more. (9…. 10…11)
Doubles: 3+3= 6 4+4= 8
Doubles plus 1, or 2: 4+5= ( Think about the
double 4+4=8 and count on one more, 8…9) 3+5= (3+3 =
6 and count on 2 more, 6…7…8)
Turn around facts: 4+3=7 3+4=7 2+6=8 6+2=8
