First Grade Reading

This year our reading program will focus on enhancing the reading skills for each student by using reading strategies, comprehension skills, phonemic awareness, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and grammar. Many different authors will be used to develop the students' love of literature. Reading fluency will be improved by practicing Fry words, high frequency words, group reading during class, and nightly home reading. Each student will come to enjoy the reading process more this year.
Back to School: Review
Reading Strategies: predict/infer, phonics/decoding/ monitor/clarify, question, evaluate, summarize

Phonics Review: consonants, short vowels, long vowels
 
Theme 1: All Together Now - Friends do all kinds of things together.
Review consonant sounds: m, s, c, t, n, f, p, b, r, h, and g.
Practice blending words with the at, an, it, and ig chunks.

High Frequency Words: go, on, the, and, here, jump, not, too, we, a, find, have, one, to, who.
 
Theme 2: Surprise!  -  Things don’t always turn out the way you expect.
Review consonant sounds d, w, l, x, y, k, v, qu, j, and z
Practice blending words with the ot, ox, en, et, ut, and ug chunks.

High frequency words: four, five, in, once, three, two, upon, what, do, for, I, is, me, my, said, you, are, away, does, he, live, pull, they, where.
 
Theme 3: Let's Look Around!  -  Interesting things happen in the world around us.
Focus on short vowel sounds 'a' and 'i'; words with r-blends; s, ed, and ing word endings; possesives; and 's contractions.

High frequency words: animal, bird, cold, fall, flower, full, look, of, see, all, call, eat, every, first, never, paper, shall, why, also, blue, brown, color, funny, like, many, some.
 
Theme 4: Family and Friends -  Family and friends share good times.
Focus on short vowel sounds 'o', 'e', and 'u'; words with s-blends, l-blends and triple clusters str, scr, spl; and silent letters kn, wr, and gn.

High frequency words: children, come, family, father, love, mother, picture, your, friend, girl, know, play, read, she, sing, today, write, car, down, hear, hold, hurt, learn, their, walk, would.
 
Theme 5: Home Sweet Home -  Everyone has a different kind of home.
Focus on words with the digraphs sh, th, wh, ch, and tch; words with a silent 'e'; words with the nd, ng, and nk endings; and contractions.

High frequency words: grow, light, long, more, other, right, room, small, these, could, house, how, over, own, so, would, give, good, her, little, try, was, fly, our.
 
Theme 6: Animal Adventures  -  Real and imaginary animals have all kinds of adventures.
Focus on words with the long 'o' and 'u' sounds; words with final blends ft, lk, nt; and words with the vowel pairs ee, ea, ai, & ay.

High frequency words: by, climb, found, morning, out, shout, show, cow, table, now, door, there, through, horse, wall, been, evening, far, forest, goes, hungry, near, soon.
 
Theme 7: We Can Work It Out  -  Characters find unique ways to solve problems.
Focus on words with the vowel pairs: oa, ow, ew, oo, ue, ou, and /oo/, ie; and the letter pattern igh.

High frequency words: again, both, gone, or, want, turn, hard, afraid, any, bear, follow, most, tall, water, idea, old, piece, shoe, start, under, very, wear, build.
 
Theme 8: Our Earth   -  We can all care for and enjoy Earth’s resources.
Focus on words with the vowel pairs 'ou' and 'ow'; word endings 's', 'ed',and 'ing'; and words with double consonants.

High frequency words: about, because, draw, happy, teacher, part, tiny, always, eight, arms, seven, warm, ready, body, carry, kind, put, saw, butter, were, work, and person.
 
Theme 9: Special Friends   -  Some friendships are more special than others.
Focus on words with different sounds for 'y.'; word endings 'es' and 'ies'; prefixes un- and re-; and suffixes '-ful', '-ly', & '-y'.

High frequency words: around, dance, else, open, after, talk, ever, through, ocean, before, buy, pretty, school, done, off, wash, only, together, watched, baby, edge, enough, garden, sharp.
 
Theme 10: We Can Do It!   -  There’s always a way to get something done.
Focus on r-controlled vowel words (or, ore, er,ir, ur, and ar); and base words with the endings '-er' and '-est'.

High frequency words: began, laugh, sure, head, divide, second, break, above, against, already, caught, begin, minute, able, eye, present, thoughts.
 

 

Reading
Standard 1:

The student uses the reading process effectively.   (LA.A.1.1)

1. predicts what a passage is about based on its title and illustrations.

2. identifies words and constructs meaning from text, illustrations, graphics, and charts using the strategies of phonics, word structure, and context clues.

3. uses knowledge of appropriate grade-, age-, and developmental-level vocabulary in reading.

4. increases comprehension by rereading, retelling, and discussion.

Standard 2:

The student constructs meaning from a wide range of texts. (LA.A.2.1)

1. determines the main idea or essential message from text and identifies supporting information.

2. selects material to read for pleasure.

3. reads for information to use in performing a task and learning a new task.

4. knows strategies to use to discover whether information presented in a text is true, including

asking others and checking another source.

5. uses simple materials of the reference system to obtain information.

Writing
Standard 1:

The student uses writing processes effectively.  (LA.B.1.1)

1. makes a plan for writing that includes a central idea and related ideas.

2. drafts and revises simple sentences and passages, stories, letters, and simple explanations that:

  • express ideas clearly; show an awareness of topic and audience; have a  beginning, middle, and

  • ending; effectively use common words; have

  • supporting detail; and are in legible printing.

3. produces final simple documents that have been edited for: correct spelling; appropriate end punctuation; correct capitalization of initial words, “I,” and names of people; correct sentence structure; and correct usage of age-appropriate verb/subject and noun/pronoun agreement.

Standard 2:
The student writes to communicate ideas and information
effectively. (LA.B.2.1)

1. writes questions and observations about familiar topics, stories, or new experiences.

2. uses knowledge and experience to tell about experiences or to write for familiar occasions,

audiences, and purposes.

3. uses basic computer skills for writing,

  • such as basic word-processing techniques such as keying words, copying, cutting,
    and pasting;

  • using e-mail; accessing and

  • using basic educational software for writing.

4. composes simple sets of instructions for simple tasks using logical sequencing of steps.

 

Listening, Viewing, and Speaking Standard 1:

The student uses listening strategies effectively. (LA.C.1.1)

1. listens for a variety of informational purposes, including curiosity, pleasure, getting directions, performing tasks, solving problems, and following rules.

2. recognizes personal preferences in listening to literature and other material.

3. carries on a conversation with another person, seeking answers and further explanations of the other’s ideas through questioning and answering.

4. retells specific details of information heard, including sequence of events.

Standard 2:

The student uses viewing strategies effectively.  (LA.C.2.1)

1. determines the main idea in a nonprint communication.

2. recognizes simple nonverbal cues, such as use of eye contact, smiles, simple hand gestures.

 

Language
Standard 1:

The student understands the nature of language(LA.D.1.1)

1. recognizes basic patterns in and functions of language (patterns such as characteristic sounds and rhythms and those found in written forms; functions such as asking questions, expressing oneself, describing objects or experience, and explaining).

2. recognizes the differences between language that is used at home and language that is used at school.

 

Standard 2:

The student understands the power of language.  (LA.D.2.1)

1. understands that word choice can shape ideas, feelings, and actions.

2. identifies and uses repetition, rhyme, and rhythm in oral and written text.

3. recognizes that use of more than one medium increases the power to influence how one thinks

and feels.

4. knows the various types of mass media (including billboards, newspapers, radio, and television)

 

Literature
Standard 1:

The student understands the common features of a variety of literary forms. (LA.E.1.1)

1. knows the basic characteristics of fables, stories, and legends.

2. identifies the story elements of setting, plot, character, problem, and solution/resolution.

Standard 2:

The student responds critically to fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. (LA.E.2.1)

1. uses personal perspective in responding to a work of literature, such as relating characters and simple events
in a story or biography to people or events in his or her own life.

2. recognizes rhymes, rhythm, and patterned structures in children’s texts.

      Arts  PreK-2

                Standard 3: The student uses speaking strategies effectively.  (LA.C.3.1)

                                   1. speaks clearly and at a volume audible in large or small-group settings.

                                  2. asks questions to seek answers and further explanation of other people’s ideas.

                                 3. speaks effectively in conversations with others.

                                 4. uses eye contact and simple gestures to enhance delivery.
