Honors American History

Mr. Van Smith

It is important that the objectives and expectations are clearly stated at the beginning of the school year for students, parents, and myself. Honors American History is a very challenging course; therefore the student needs to be aware of what is expected. The following is a guideline of what is required of the student to obtain an A, B, C, D, or F.

A OUTSTANDING

Attitude

v Takes responsibility for one’s own actions

v Serious and conscientious about all aspects of school (in and out of school)

v Accepts failure maturely and takes constructive steps to correct this failure

v Shows a strong desire to learn

v Respects the efforts of peers and teacher

v Always on-task in classroom

Class Participation

v Always prepared with materials (textbook, notebook, pens, etc.)

v Asks questions when confused

v Consistently makes positive contributions to the classroom environment

v Consistently participates in class and group discussions

Classwork/Homework

v Always shows maximum and consistent effort on assignments

v Always turns assignments in on time

v Always listens to instructions and begins promptly

v Always takes pride in the work that they do

v Never has to be reminded to stay on task

Current Events

v Always completed on time (usually Fridays)

v Article is appropriate to course and grade level

v Hard copy of article is attached to current event (staples, glue, tape, etc. are all acceptable)

v Student demonstrates higher order thinking skills

v Article contains all four required sections (Facts, Issue, Relevance to Class, and Opinion)

v All four sections are clearly labeled

Notebook

v Brings notebook to class everyday

v Clearly labeled to indicate subject, name, and class period

v Contains all four dividers (Course Information, Classwork, Handouts, Homework)

v Has ample paper for assignments

v All pages are dated and in proper order

Tests/Quizzes

v Demonstrates effective study skills

v Has complete command of subject matter

v Applies higher order thinking skills (especially in extended response essays)

Projects

v Projects are always turned in on time

v Presentations are done professionally

v Demonstrates higher order creative thinking

Sustained Silent Reading

v Reads his or her reading material silently without reminder

v Always brings reading material to class when assigned

v Brings reading material which is appropriate to student’s reading level

B GOOD

Attitude

v May not always take responsibility for one’s actions (makes excuses)

v Generally serious and conscientious about all aspects of school

v May not always accept failure in a mature manner and does not always correct mistakes

v Usually shows eagerness for learning

v Respects the efforts of peers and teacher

v Almost always on-task in classroom

Class Participation

v Always prepared with class materials with one or two exceptions

v Usually asks questions when confused

v Contributes positively to the classroom environment

v Consistently participates in class and group discussions

Classwork/Homework

v Usually show maximum and consistent effort on assignments
