Welcome to Mrs. Colbourne's Home Page.  I am the Reading Coach for  Norland Elementary School.  I have have been teaching for over ten years.  I have taught Kindergarten and First Grade for  eight years.  I am married with five children and four grandchildren.  I have my Masters Degree in TESOL.

This site was created to keep parents, students and teachers inform of pertinent information.  On this site you will find a collection of links I think are useful to students, parents, and teachers.  I DIDN'T CREATE all of these sites, I only COLLECTED AND ARRANGED them into some type of order.  Hopefully, the selections offered will be helpful, as we work together to make children's learning experiences positive and successful.  Please let me know if there are any particular topics you'd like to see mentioned here and I will try to include your requests.   Please be sure to check out my Home Learning Page, Supply List2 Page, Resource Page, Weekly Spelling Page, Fry Word List, and School-wide Discipline Plan Page.

Teachers

There are many diverse theories of education, as you know.  In education, as in the fashion world, there is also usually a "fashion  of the week" theory for different subjects that "experts" proclaim is the be-all and end-all approach to education.  If you only use this process, teach this way, then certainly your students will develop a strong need within them to attain and understand the information that you believe is important to their future well being.  Well, I found that the true mystery to unlocking the brains of children is: Children learn what is important to them.   They make this judgment based on what they see the people they respect and love doing.

Parents

Successful learning begins in the home.  "You are your child's first and best teacher." (Richard and Mary Behm)  A parent's active involvement in the child's education can greatly improve classroom performance.  To help your child learn at home, try these helpful hints:

Parents, the home, the neighborhood - these are the first and most important teachers of literacy.  They show the child that reading and writing are real-world events, that reading and writing make life more interesting and enjoyable.
