Music Syllabus

2013-2014

Coral Gables Preparatory Academy

Yamilka Gómez – Music Teacher

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year at Coral Gables Preparatory Academy. This year our students will continue to explore their creative talents by learning the fundamentals of music and the responsibilities that lead to a successful musical performance.

To ensure that each student has a successful year, your child will need the following materials:

·         Students in grades 2-5 are required to have a 3 prong Duo-Tang folder with pockets. The folder must include notebook paper and a pencil. Please make sure that your child’s folder is labeled with his/her name and the classroom teacher’s name. Students are expected to bring their folder to each music class.

·         Students in grades 4-5 are required to bring a recorder (flute) to every music class. For health reasons, each student is asked to purchase his/her instrument. Recorders will be sold at a local music store. Once they become available, I will send a flyer home with all the details regarding the purchase.

Grading Policy

·         Class participation and effort: Students are expected and encouraged to participate in class performance activities and discussions. Students who actively participate, practice and put forth maximum effort will excel in music class.

·         Conduct: Students are expected to follow all classroom rules and behave in an appropriate manner. Please keep in mind that music is all about Listening. Excessive talking and lack of focus often affects the academic performance of the child in music class.

Music Class Rules

1.       Work diligently

2.       Follow directions

3.       Work and play safely

4.       Respect other’s property

5.       Keep to your own space

6.       Listen to others

Rewards: Students will receive praise and a stamp on their folder every time they show effort in learning and follow the rules. Students who put forth maximum effort and follow the rules are asked to lead the class in our opening Solfege activity.

Consequences: Students are always given an opportunity to reevaluate their actions and make better decisions. Students who fail to improve their behavior after receiving a verbal warning will receive either a call home to notify parents or a written note in the agenda for parents to sign and return to me. If the behavior is disruptive to the point where class must stop to deal with a student, he/she will be referred to administration for further action and will be given a detention by teacher.

·         Homework and Tests:  Students will receive written work, homework, and tests as part of the music curriculum. Oftentimes, the homework will be instrumental or vocal music that is meant to be practiced at home. Students will be given a weekly grade for the homework assignment. Fifth graders will also be graded for any staged performance we engage in.
